इस सूक्त का नाम पृथ्वी सूक्त और मा मातृ सूक्त भी है। इसमें वर्णित धर्म और नीति के पालन से राजा, प्रजा और प्रत्येक ग्रहस्थ और मनुष्य मात्र का कल्याण होता है। पृथ्वी सूक्त अर्थर्ववेद के बारहवें कान का प्रथम सूक्त है। इस सूक्त में कुल 63 मंत्र हैं। उक्त सूक्त के मंत्रदृष्टा ऋषि अथर्वा (शाब्दिक अर्थ: गतिहीन, अस्थिर) हैं। उक्त सूत्र राष्ट्रीय अवधारणा एवं वसुधैव वकुटुंम्बकम की भावना को विकसित करने में अत्यंत उपयोगी है। इन मंत्रों के माध्यम से ऋषि ने पृथ्वी के आदिभौतिक और आदिदैविक दोनों रूपों का स्तवन किया है।

सत्यं बृहदृतमुग्रं दीक्षा तपो ब्रह्म यज्ञः पृथिवीं धारयन्ति।
सा नो भूतस्य भव्यस्य पत्न्युरुं लोकं पृथिवी नः कृणोतु॥१॥

satyaṃ bṛhadṛtamugraṃ dīkṣā tapo brahma yajñaḥ pṛthivīṃ dhārayanti।
sā no bhūtasya bhavyasya patnyuruṃ lokaṃ pṛthivī naḥ kṛṇotu॥1॥

धरती माता को नमन! सत्य (सत्यम), ब्रह्मांडीय दिव्य नियम (रीतम), आध्यात्मिक जुनून जो शक्तिशाली दीक्षाओं, तपस्याओं और आत्म समर्पण में ब्राह्मण की खोज (ऋषियों द्वारा) में प्रकट हुआ; इन ने युगों तक धरती मां को बनाए रखा है (जिन्होंने बदले में इन्हें अपनी गोद में रखा है), वह, जो हमारे लिए अतीत और भविष्य की पत्नी है (इसकी साक्षी होने के नाते), वह इस दुनिया में हमारे आंतरिक जीवन का विस्तार कर सकती है। ब्रह्मांडीय जीवन (उसकी पवित्रता और विशालता के माध्यम से)।

Salutations to mother earth! the truth (satyam), the cosmic divine law (ritam), the spiritual passion manifested in mighty initiations, penances and self dedications to the search of brahman (by the sages); these have sustained the mother earth for ages (who in turn have supported these in her bosom), she, who is to us the consort of the past and the future (being its witness), may she expand our inner life in this world towards the cosmic life (through her purity and vastness).

असंबाधं बध्यतो मानवानां यस्या उद्वतः प्रवतः समं बहु ।
नानावीर्या ओषधीर्या बिभर्ति पृथिवी नः प्रथतां राध्यतां नः ॥२॥

asaṃbādhaṃ badhyato mānavānāṃ yasyā udvataḥ pravataḥ samaṃ bahu ।
nānāvīryā oṣadhīryā bibharti pṛthivī naḥ prathatāṃ rādhyatāṃ naḥ ॥2॥

धरती माता को नमन! जो अपने पहाड़ों, ढलानों और मैदानों के माध्यम से मानव को (बाहरी और आंतरिक दोनों) अबाध स्वतंत्रता प्रदान करती है, वह कई पौधों और विभिन्न शक्तियों के औषधीय जड़ी-बूटियों को धारण करती है; वह अपना धन हम तक पहुँचाए (और हमें स्वस्थ करे)।

Salutations to mother earth! who extends unimpeded freedom (both outer and inner) to human beings through her mountains, slopes and plains, she bears many plants and medicinal herbs of various potencies; may she extend her riches to us (and make us healthy).

यस्यां समुद्र उत सिन्धुरापो यस्यामन्नं कृष्टयः संबभूवुः।
यस्यामिदं जिन्वति प्राणदेजत्सा नो भूमिः पूर्वपेये दधातु॥३॥

yasyāṃ samudra uta sindhurāpo yasyāmannaṃ kṛṣṭayaḥ saṃbabhūvuḥ।
yasyāmidaṃ jinvati prāṇadejatsā no bhūmiḥ pūrvapeye dadhātu॥3॥

धरती माता को नमन! उसी में समुद्र और नदी का जल एक साथ बुना हुआ है; उसी में अन्न है, जो जोतने पर प्रकट होता है, उसी में जीवन भर जीवित रहता है; वह हमें वह जीवन प्रदान करे।

Salutations to mother earth! in her is woven together ocean and river waters; in her is contained food which she manifests when ploughed, in her indeed is alive all lives; may she bestow us with that life.

यस्याश्चतस्रः प्रदिशः पृथिव्या यस्यामन्नं कृष्टयः संबभूवुः।
या बिभर्ति बहुधा प्राणदेजत्सा नो भूमिर्गोष्वप्यन्ने दधातु॥४॥

yasyāścatasraḥ pradiśaḥ pṛthivyā yasyāmannaṃ kṛṣṭayaḥ saṃbabhūvuḥ।
yā bibharti bahudhā prāṇadejatsā no bhūmirgoṣvapyanne dadhātu॥4॥

धरती माता को नमन! उसमें विश्व की चारों दिशाओं का वास है; उसमें अन्न समाहित है जो वह हल चलाने पर प्रकट होता है, वह अपने में रहने वाले विभिन्न जीवन का निर्वाह करती है; वह, धरती माँ, हमें भोजन में भी मौजूद जीवन की किरण प्रदान करे।

Salutations to mother earth! in her resides the four directions of the world; in her is contained food which she manifests when ploughed, she sustains the various lives living in her; may she, the mother earth, bestow on us the ray of life present even in food.

यस्यां पूर्वे पूर्वजना विचक्रिरे यस्यां देवा असुरानभ्यवर्तयन्।
गवामश्वानां वयसश्च विष्ठा भगं वर्चः पृथिवी नो दधातु॥५॥

yasyāṃ pūrve pūrvajanā vicakrire yasyāṃ devā asurānabhyavartayan।
gavāmaśvānāṃ vayasaśca viṣṭhā bhagaṃ varcaḥ pṛthivī no dadhātu॥5॥

धरती माता को नमन! उसमें हमारे पूर्वज पहले के समय में रहते थे और (उनके कार्य) करते थे; उसमें देवताओं (अच्छे बलों) ने असुरों (बुरी ताकतों) को उलट दिया (पहले के समय से), उसमें गाय, घोड़े, पक्षी (और पहले के समय में अन्य जानवर) रहते थे; वह, धरती माँ, हमें समृद्धि और वैभव प्रदान करे।

Salutations to mother earth! in her our forefathers lived and performed (their activities) in earlier times; in her the devas (the good forces) overturned the asuras (the evil forces) (since earlier times), in her lived the cows, horses, birds (and other animals in earlier times); may she, the mother earth, bestow on us prosperity and splendour.

विश्वंभरा वसुधानी प्रतिष्ठा हिरण्यवक्षा जगतो निवेशनी।
वैश्वानरं बिभ्रती भूमिरग्निमिन्द्रऋषभा द्रविणे नो दधातु॥६॥

viśvaṃbharā vasudhānī pratiṣṭhā hiraṇyavakṣā jagato niveśanī।
vaiśvānaraṃ bibhratī bhūmiragnimindraṛṣabhā draviṇe no dadhātu॥6॥

धरती माता को नमन! वह विश्वंभर (सब सहनशील) है, वह वसुधा (सभी धन का उत्पादक) है, वह प्रतिष्ठा है (जिस नींव पर हम रहते हैं), वह हिरण्याक्ष (सुनहरी छाती की) और दुनिया का निवास स्थान है, वह वैश्वनार धारण करती है (सार्वभौमिक अग्नि) उसके भीतर, वह अग्नि जो इंद्र और ऋषभ को शक्ति प्रदान करती है; धरती माता हम पर कृपा करें (उस अग्नि का तेज और हमें बलवान बनाएं)।

Salutations to mother earth! she is Vishwambhara (all-bearing), she is Vasudhaa (producer of all wealth), she is Pratishtha (foundation on which we live), she is Hiranyavaksha (of golden bosom) and the dwelling place of the world, she holds the Vaishvanara (the universal fire) within her, the fire which empowers Indra and Rishabha; may the mother earth bestow on us (the splendour of that fire and make us strong).

यां रक्षन्त्यस्वप्ना विश्वदानीं देवा भूमिं पृथिवीमप्रमादम्।
सा नो मधु प्रियं दुहामथो उक्षतु वर्चसा॥७॥

yāṃ rakṣantyasvapnā viśvadānīṃ devā bhūmiṃ pṛthivīmapramādam।
sā no madhu priyaṃ duhāmatho ukṣatu varcasā॥7॥

धरती माता को नमन! उसकी, देवता सतर्कता के साथ नींद की रक्षा करते हैं, वह जो सब कुछ देने वाली धरती माता है, वह हमारे लिए उस आनंदमय शहद को दूध दे जो (देवत्व का) महान वैभव देता है।

Salutations to mother earth! her, the devas protect sleeplessly with vigilence, she who is the all-giving mother earth, may she milk for us that delightful honey which gives the great splendour (of divinity).

यार्णवेऽधि सलिलमग्न आसीद्यां मायाभिरन्वचरन्मनीषिणः।
यस्या हृदयं परमे व्योमन्त्सत्येनावृतममृतं पृथिव्याः।
सा नो भूमिस्त्विषिं बलं राष्ट्रे दधातूत्तमे॥८॥

yārṇave'dhi salilamagna āsīdyāṃ māyābhiranvacaranmanīṣiṇaḥ।
yasyā hṛdayaṃ parame vyomantsatyenāvṛtamamṛtaṃ pṛthivyāḥ।
sā no bhūmistviṣiṃ balaṃ rāṣṭre dadhātūttame॥8॥

धरती माता को नमन! समुद्र के ऊपर बैठे और उसके जल (ध्यान में) में डूबे हुए, ऋषियों ने अलौकिक शक्तियों द्वारा उसका पीछा किया (अर्थात योग शक्तियों द्वारा उसके वास्तविक स्वरूप को समझने की कोशिश की), (उन्होंने पाया कि) धरती माँ का हृदय सबसे ऊँचा है सत्य और अमरता से आच्छादित व्योमन (आध्यात्मिक आकाश), वह, धरती माता, हमें और हमारे महान राज्य पर अपना वैभव प्रदान करे।

Salutations to mother earth! sitting above sea as well as lying immersed in its waters (in meditation), the sages pursued her by supernatural powers (i.e. tried to understand her real nature by yogic powers), (they found that) the heart of mother earth lies in the highest vyoman (spiritual sky) enveloped by truth and immortality, may she, the mother earth, bestow her splendorous vigour on us and our great kingdom.

यस्यामापः परिचराः समानीरहोरात्रे अप्रमादं क्षरन्ति।
सा नो भूमिर्भूरिधारा पयो दुहामथो उक्षतु वर्चसा॥९॥

yasyāmāpaḥ paricarāḥ samānīrahorātre apramādaṃ kṣaranti।
sā no bhūmirbhūridhārā payo duhāmatho ukṣatu varcasā॥9॥

धरती माता को नमन! उसमें जल दिन-रात चारों ओर से बहता रहता है (अर्थात् अविनाशी), वह, पृथ्वी माता हमें अपनी प्रचुर धाराओं का दूध दे, और हमें अपने तेज (पानी में मौजूद) के साथ नम करे।

Salutations to mother earth! in her the waters flow on all sides day and night with vigilence (i.e. unceasingly), may she, the mother earth give us the milk of her abundant streams, and moisten us with its splendour (present in water).

यामश्विनावमिमातां विष्णुर्यस्यां विचक्रमे।
इन्द्रो यां चक्र आत्मनेऽनमित्रां शचीपतिः।
सा नो भूमिर्वि सृजतां माता पुत्राय मे पयः॥१०॥

yāmaśvināvamimātāṃ viṣṇuryasyāṃ vicakrame।
indro yāṃ cakra ātmane'namitrāṃ śacīpatiḥ।
sā no bhūmirvi sṛjatāṃ mātā putrāya me payaḥ॥10॥

धरती माता को नमन! उसे, अश्विनों (दिव्य चिकित्सकों) ने मापा है (यानी उसे जड़ी-बूटियों और उपचार गुणों से भर दिया है), उसके विष्णु स्ट्रोड में (उसे दैवीय गुणों के साथ प्रदान करते हुए), शची के पति इंद्र ने उसकी आत्मा को दुश्मनों से मुक्त किया (अर्थात बनाया) उसकी आत्मा एक बेटे के लिए एक माँ की तरह सभी की दोस्त है), वह अपना दूध (दया के साथ) बहाए जैसा कि एक माँ अपने बेटे के लिए करती है।

Salutations to mother earth! her, the aswins (divine physicians) have measured out (i.e. filled her with herbs and healing qualities), in her Vishnu strode (imparting her with divine qualities), Indra, the husband of Shachi, made her soul free from enemies (i.e. made her soul the friend of all like a mother to a son), may she pour forth her milk (with kindness) as a mother does to her son.

गिरयस्ते पर्वता हिमवन्तोऽरण्यं ते पृथिवि स्योनमस्तु।
बभ्रुं कृष्णां रोहिणीं विश्वरूपां ध्रुवां भूमिं पृथिवीमिन्द्रगुप्ताम्।
अजीतेऽहतो अक्षतोऽध्यष्ठां पृथिवीमहम्॥११॥

girayaste parvatā himavanto'raṇyaṃ te pṛthivi syonamastu।
babhruṃ kṛṣṇāṃ rohiṇīṃ viśvarūpāṃ dhruvāṃ bhūmiṃ pṛthivīmindraguptām।
ajīte'hato akṣato'dhyaṣṭhāṃ pṛthivīmaham॥11॥

धरती माता को नमन! हे धरती माता, तेरी पहाड़ियाँ और बर्फ से ढके पहाड़ (इसकी शीतलता हमारे भीतर फैला दे); आपके जंगल हमारे भीतर अपनी खुशियाँ बिखेरें, आप अपने कई रंगों के साथ एक विश्वरूप पेश करें - बभरू (भूरा) (पहाड़ों का), कृष्णा (नीला) (नदियों का), रोहिणी (लाल) (फूलों का); (लेकिन इन सभी आकर्षक दिखावे के पीछे) हे धरती माता, आप ध्रुव के समान हैं - दृढ़ और अचल; और आप इंद्र द्वारा संरक्षित हैं, (आपकी दृढ़ नींव पर) जो अविजित, अखंड और अखंड है, मैं दृढ़ (और संपूर्ण, हे माता) खड़ा हूं।

Salutations to mother earth! O mother earth, may your hills and snow-clad mountains (spread its coolness within us); may your forests spread its delight within us, you present a vishwarupa with your many colours – Babhru (brown) (of mountains), Krishna (blue) (of rivers), Rohini (red) (of flowers); (but behind all these enchanting appearances) O mother earth, you are like Dhruva – firm and immovable; and you are protected by Indra, (on your firm foundation) which is unconquered, unslayed and unbroken whole, I stand firm (and whole, O mother).

यत्ते मध्यं पृथिवि यच्च नभ्यं यास्त ऊर्जस्तन्वः संबभूवुः।
तासु नो धेह्यभि नः पवस्व माता भूमिः पुत्रो अहं पृथिव्याः।
पर्जन्यः पिता स उ नः पिपर्तु॥१२॥

yatte madhyaṃ pṛthivi yacca nabhyaṃ yāsta ūrjastanvaḥ saṃbabhūvuḥ।
tāsu no dhehyabhi naḥ pavasva mātā bhūmiḥ putro ahaṃ pṛthivyāḥ।
parjanyaḥ pitā sa u naḥ pipartu॥12॥

धरती माता को नमन! आपके केंद्र में, हे पृथ्वी माता, आपकी नाभि है, जिसमें से जीवन शक्ति निकलती है और फैलती है, हमें उस शक्ति में अवशोषित और शुद्ध करें, हे भूमि माता, मैं धरती माता का पुत्र हूं, परजन्य (वर्षा देव) मेरे पिता हैं , वह हमें (पानी में महत्वपूर्ण शक्ति के साथ) भर दे।

Salutations to mother earth! in your center, O mother earth, is your navel from which the vital power emanates and spreads out, absorb us in that power and purify us, O bhoomi mata, i am the son of mother earth, parjanya (rain god) is my father, may he fill us (with the vital power in water).

यस्यां वेदिं परिगृह्णन्ति भूम्यां यस्यां यज्ञं तन्वते विश्वकर्माणः।
यस्यां मीयन्ते स्वरवः पृथिव्यामूर्ध्वाः शुक्रा आहुत्याः पुरस्तात्।
सा नो भूमिर्वर्धयद्वर्धमाना॥१३॥

yasyāṃ vediṃ parigṛhṇanti bhūmyāṃ yasyāṃ yajñaṃ tanvate viśvakarmāṇaḥ।
yasyāṃ mīyante svaravaḥ pṛthivyāmūrdhvāḥ śukrā āhutyāḥ purastāt।
sā no bhūmirvardhayadvardhamānā॥13॥

धरती माता को नमन! उसमें, भूमि (जमीन) ने खुद को बलि वेदी के रूप में फैलाया है; उसमें संसार के सारे क्रिया-कलाप यज्ञ के रूप में फैले हुए हैं, उसमें आरम्भ से ही यज्ञों के समय जगत् की ध्वनियाँ (यज्ञों के सदृश) ऊपर उठती हैं और शुद्ध करने वाली ऊपरी परतों में विलीन हो जाती हैं। प्रतीकात्मक रूप से श्रमिकों को शुद्ध करना), पृथ्वी द्वारा प्रदान किए गए विस्तार (विस्तार स्थान) का विस्तार हो सकता है (हमारे भीतर भी)।

Salutations to mother earth! in her, bhoomi (ground) has spread herself as the sacrificial altar; in her, all the activities of the world has spread themselves as yagya, in her, from the beginning, the sounds (of activities) of the world (resembling the chants of yagya) during oblations rises up and disappears in the purifying upper layers (symbolically purifying the workers), may the expansion (expanding space) provided by the earth, expand (our inner selves also).

यो नो द्वेषत्पृथिवी यः पृतन्याद्योऽभिदासान्मनसा यो वधेन। तं नो भूमे रन्धय पूर्वकृत्वरि॥१४॥

yo no dveṣatpṛthivī yaḥ pṛtanyādyo'bhidāsānmanasā yo vadhena। taṃ no bhūme randhaya pūrvakṛtvari॥14॥

धरती माता को नमन! वह जो हमसे घृणा करता है, हे पृथ्वी, वह जो हम पर हमला करता है या मानसिक रूप से हमें दुश्मन मानता है, या वह जो हम पर हमला करता है, उसे, हे पृथ्वी, वश में करो, जैसा कि आपने प्राचीन काल से किया है।

Salutations to mother earth! he who hates us, O earth, he who attacks us or mentally considers us as enemies, or he who strikes us, him, O mother earth, subdue, as you have done since earliest times.

त्वज्जातास्त्वयि चरन्ति मर्त्यास्त्वं बिभर्षि द्विपदस्त्वं चतुष्पदः।
तवेमे पृथिवि पञ्च मानवा येभ्यो ज्योतिरमृतं मर्त्येभ्य उद्यन्त्सूर्यो रश्मिभिरातनोति॥१५॥

tvajjātāstvayi caranti martyāstvaṃ bibharṣi dvipadastvaṃ catuṣpadaḥ।
taveme pṛthivi pañca mānavā yebhyo jyotiramṛtaṃ martyebhya udyantsūryo raśmibhirātanoti॥15॥

धरती माता को नमन! (पहला वे) जो आपके द्वारा निर्मित, (दूसरा) वे जो आप में घूम रहे हैं, (तीसरे) वे दो-पैर वाले और (चौथे) वे चार-पैर वाले; (सब) जिसे तुम नश्वर भूमि में धारण करते हो, पाँचवाँ मानव है, जिससे अमरता का प्रकाश (सम) मृत्युलोक से निकलता है, जिसे हे धरती माता, तुम उगते हुए सूर्य की किरणों से (अर्थात्) फैलाते हो। अमरता का सार आप में व्याप्त है)।

Salutations to mother earth! (first those) produced by you, (second) those moving about in you, (third) those two-footed and (fourth) those four-footed ones; (all of) whom you bear in the land of mortality, fifth is the manava, from whom the light of immortality emanates (even) from the land of mortality, which O mother earth, you diffuse with the rays of the rising sun (i.e. the essence of immortality pervades in you).

ता नः प्रजाः सं दुह्रतां समग्रा वाचो मधु पृथिवी धेहि मह्यम्॥१६॥

tā naḥ prajāḥ saṃ duhratāṃ samagrā vāco madhu pṛthivī dhehi mahyam॥16॥

धरती माता को नमन! (अमरता का सार आप में व्याप्त है) हम, आपके बच्चे (सक्षम हो) आप में हर जगह मौजूद ऋत (दिव्य आदेश) को दूध पिलाएं, हे धरती माता, महान मधुर भाषण (वैदिक मंत्र) को आत्मसात करके (अर्थात समझ)।

Salutations to mother earth! (the essence of immortality pervades in you) may we, your children (be able to) together milk the ritam (divine order) present everywhere in you, O mother earth, by absorbing (i.e. understanding) the great honeyed speech (vedic mantras).

विश्वस्वं मातरमोषधीनां ध्रुवां भूमिं पृथिवीं धर्मणा धृताम्।
शिवां स्योनामनु चरेम विश्वहा॥१७॥

viśvasvaṃ mātaramoṣadhīnāṃ dhruvāṃ bhūmiṃ pṛthivīṃ dharmaṇā dhṛtām।
śivāṃ syonāmanu carema viśvahā॥17॥

धरती माता को नमन! जड़ी-बूटियाँ (पौधे) जो संसार की माता के समान हैं (जो हमें पालती हैं) अचल पृथ्वी (भूमि) पर उगती हैं; वह पृथ्वी जो धर्म द्वारा धारण की जाती है, और जिसमें शुभता धीरे-धीरे पूरे विश्व में व्याप्त है।

Salutations to mother earth! the herbs (plants) which are like mothers of the world (who sustains us) grows on the immovable earth (bhoomi); the earth which is held by dharma, and in which auspiciousness gently pervades throughout the world.

महत्सधस्थं महती बभूविथ महान्वेग एजथुर्वेपथुष्टे।
महांस्त्वेन्द्रो रक्षत्यप्रमादम्।
सा नो भूमे प्र रोचय हिरण्यस्येव संदृशि मा नो द्विक्षत कश्चन॥१८॥

mahatsadhasthaṃ mahatī babhūvitha mahānvega ejathurvepathuṣṭe।
mahāṃstvendro rakṣatyapramādam।
sā no bhūme pra rocaya hiraṇyasyeva saṃdṛśi mā no dvikṣata kaścana॥18॥

धरती माता को नमन! महान यह स्थान है जहाँ हम एक साथ खड़े होते हैं (अर्थात एक साथ रहते हैं); पराक्रमी है उसमें मौजूद शक्ति, जो उसकी गति और हिलने की महान गति को नियंत्रित करती है, महान देव इंद्र हैं जो सतर्कता (दिन और रात) से उसकी रक्षा करते हैं, (दैवीय शक्तियों से आच्छादित इस महान मिलन स्थल में) वह भूमि हो ( पृथ्वी), हमें सोने की तरह चमकीला बना दें ताकि हम किसी को घृणा की दृष्टि से न देखें।

Salutations to mother earth! great is this place where we stand together (i.e. live together); mighty is the force present in it, which controls its great speed of movement and shaking, great is the god indra who protects her with vigilence (day and night), (in this great meeting place enveloped by divine powers) may she the bhoomi (earth), make us lustrous like gold so that we do not see anyone with the attitude of hatred.

अग्निर्भूम्यामोषधीष्वग्निमापो बिभ्रत्यग्निरश्मसु। अग्निरन्तः पुरुषेषु गोष्वश्वेष्वग्नयः ॥१९॥

agnirbhūmyāmoṣadhīṣvagnimāpo bibhratyagniraśmasu। agnirantaḥ puruṣeṣu goṣvaśveṣvagnayaḥ ॥19॥

ईश्वर नियम से पृथिवी का अग्निताप अन्न आदि पदार्थों और प्राणियों में प्रवेश करके उनमें बढ़ने तथा पुष्ट होने का सामर्थ्य देता है।

By God's rule, the fire heat of the earth enters the food and other things and gives them the power to grow and become strong.
