Sri Ganesha Pancharatnam was composed by Sri Adi Shankara on Lord Ganesha in Pillayarpatti (Tamil Nadu, India). Pillayarpatti is known as Vakratundapuram in Samskrit. Pancharatnam means, five gems. Sri Adi Shankara praises Ganesha in these five stanzas. The last shloka, shloka 6 explains the phalasruti, i.e, benefits of reading this shloka. Those who recite will be bestowed with good health, wealth, knowledge, and good children. Also, this helps one in overcoming the obstacles in life. Nayaka means leader – Vinayaka means no leader above him.

मुदाकरात्तमोदकं सदा विमुक्तिसाधकं
कलाधरावतंसकं विलासिलोकरक्षकम्।
अनायकैकनायकं विनाशितेभदैत्यकं
नताशुभाशुनाशकं नमामि तं विनायकम्॥१॥

mudākarāttamodakaṃ sadā vimuktisādhakaṃ
kalādharāvataṃsakaṃ vilāsilokarakṣakam।
anāyakaikanāyakaṃ vināśitebhadaityakaṃ
natāśubhāśunāśakaṃ namāmi taṃ vināyakam॥1॥

भगवान विनायक को नमस्कार, जो खुशी से अपने हाथ में मीठा मोदक रखते हैं (क्योंकि उन्हें भक्तों को मोदक, अर्थात सुख, प्रदान करना अच्छा लगता है) और जो हमेशा अपने भक्तों को मुक्ति (मोक्ष) देते हैं। जो चन्द्रमा को आभूषण के रूप में धारण करते हैं (अर्थात भक्तों की बुद्धि को उच्च या सही पथ/दिशा पर रखते हैं) और समस्त लोकों का रक्षक है। वह जो निराश्रित या असहाय लोगों के लिए एक नेता के रूप में कार्य करते हैं, राक्षसों का नाश करता है (गजमुखासुर दैत्य का नाश करने वाले)। जो किसी के जीवन में बुरी और अशुभ चीजों को दूर कर देता है, मैं आपको नमन करता हूं, भगवान विनायक।

Salutations to Lord Vinayak, who holds sweet modak in his hand and always gives salvation to his devotees. One who wears the moon as an ornament and is the protector of all the worlds. He who acts as a leader for the destitute or the helpless, destroys the demons. The one who removes bad and inauspicious things in his life, I bow to you, Lord Vinayaka.

नतेतरातिभीकरं नवोदितार्कभास्वरं
नमत्सुरारिनिर्जरं नताधिकापदुद्धरम्।
सुरेश्वरं निधीश्वरं गजेश्वरं गणेश्वरं
महेश्वरं तमाश्रये परात्परं निरन्तरम्॥२॥

natetarātibhīkaraṃ navoditārkabhāsvaraṃ
namatsurārinirjaraṃ natādhikāpaduddharam।
sureśvaraṃ nidhīśvaraṃ gajeśvaraṃ gaṇeśvaraṃ
maheśvaraṃ tamāśraye parātparaṃ nirantaram॥2॥

मैं भगवान गणेश को नमन करता हूं, जो बेईमानी और अहंकार से लोगों में भय पैदा करते हैं, जो उगते सूरज की तरह चमकते हैं। (अरुणोदय (सूर्योदय) समय के दौरान, सूर्य सबसे आकर्षक, सबसे दयालु और सबसे चमकदार होता है। इसलिए हम उस समय जप, पूजा, ध्यान आदि करने की सलाह देते हैं।) मैं उससे प्रार्थना करता हूं जो देवताओं के शत्रुओं का नाश करते है और जो अपने भक्तों को बाधाओं से मुक्त और उत्थान करते हैं। हे गणेश, देवताओं के नेता, धन के मुखिया, हाथी-मुखी देवता और आकाशीय गणों के प्रमुख (शिव के परिचारकों के समूह हैं जिन्हें गण कहा जाता है जैसे प्रमथ गण, रुद्र गण आदि। इन गणों को गणेश द्वारा नियंत्रित किया जाता है।), जो भगवान महेश्वर के समान हैं और उनकी शरण में आने वाले भक्तों को हमेशा सुरक्षा प्रदान करते हैं।

I bow to Lord Ganesha, who by dishonesty and arrogance creates fear in people, who shines like a rising sun. (During Arunodhaya (sun rise) time, Sun is most attractive, most benevolent and most radiant. That is why we recommend to perform, Japa, Pooja, meditation etc at that time.) I pray to him who destroys the enemies of the gods and who frees and uplifts his devotees from obstacles. O Ganesha, the leader of the gods, the head of wealth, the elephant-headed deity and the head of the celestial ganas (Shiva has groups of attendants called Ganas such as Pramatha Ganas, Rudhra Ganas etc. These Ganas are controlled by Ganesha.), who is like Lord Maheshwara and always provides protection to the devotees who come under his shelter.

समस्तलोकशंकरं निरस्तदैत्यकुञ्जरं
दरेतरोदरं वरं वरेभवक्त्रमक्षरम्।
कृपाकरं क्षमाकरं मुदाकरं यशस्करं
मनस्करं नमस्कृतां नमस्करोमि भास्वरम्॥३॥

samastalokaśaṃkaraṃ nirastadaityakuñjaraṃ
daretarodaraṃ varaṃ varebhavaktramakṣaram।
kṛpākaraṃ kṣamākaraṃ mudākaraṃ yaśaskaraṃ
manaskaraṃ namaskṛtāṃ namaskaromi bhāsvaram॥3॥

समस्त लोकों का कल्याण करने वाले, मूढ़ हाथी के समान राक्षसों (भक्तों का अहंकार) का संहार करने वाले भगवान गणेश भगवान को मैं प्रणाम करता हूं। जिनका बड़ा पेट है जो सम्पूर्ण दुनिया और समृद्धि का प्रतीक है। वो अक्षर हैं (जिसका क्षय नहीं होता) जो महान वरदान और हाथी मुखी देवता हैं। जो कृपा करते हैं, भक्तों की त्रुटियों को क्षमा करते हैं, सुख के देवता हैं और जो अपने भक्तों को यश देते है (यश - चिरस्थायी प्रसिद्धि को संदर्भित करता है; कीर्ति - केवल थोड़े समय के लिए चलने वाली प्रसिद्धि को संदर्भित करता है;)। जो भक्तों को अच्छे विचार प्रदान करते हैं। मैं आपको नमन करता हूं, चमकदार रूप वाले भगवान।

I bow to Lord Ganesha, who is the doer of all the worlds, who destroys the demons like a foolish elephant (ego of the worshiper). Who has a big belly which is a symbol of all the worlds and prosperity. He is imperishable, immortal. (Letters of alphabets are called Akshara because, they cannot be broken further. Basic unit of our alphabet.) Who is a great boon and elephant-faced deity. One who is merciful, forgives the errors of the devotees, is the god of happiness and who gives everlasting fame to his devotees (yasas – refers to everlasting fame; Keerti – refers to fame lasting only for a short time;). Who gives good thoughts to the devotees. I bow to you, Lord of the shining form.

अकिंचनार्तिमार्जनं चिरन्तनोक्तिभाजनं
पुरारिपूर्वनन्दनं सुरारिगर्वचर्वणम्।
प्रपञ्चनाशभीषणं धनंजयादिभूषणम्
कपोलदानवारणं भजे पुराणवारणम्॥४॥

akiṃcanārtimārjanaṃ cirantanoktibhājanaṃ
purāripūrvanandanaṃ surārigarvacarvaṇam।
prapañcanāśabhīṣaṇaṃ dhanaṃjayādibhūṣaṇam
kapoladānavāraṇaṃ bhaje purāṇavāraṇam॥4॥

असहाय के कष्टों को दूर करने वाले, प्राचीन ग्रंथों और कहावतों में स्तुति करने वाले भगवान गणेश को मैं नमन करता हूं। पुरारी (शिव) के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र - त्रिपुरा (तीन पुरों के रूप वाले राक्षस ) के संहारक, राक्षसों के अभिमान का नाश करने वाले। वह जो महान प्रलय (प्रलय) के दौरान अपनी शक्तियों का उपयोग करते हैं, अग्नि जैसे देवताओं को अपने आभूषणों के रूप में सुशोभित करते हैं, जिनके गाल हाथी के समान अनुग्रह की धारा प्रवाहित करते हैं, मैं प्राचीन हाथी के सिर वाले भगवान की पूजा करता हूं। धनंजय अर्जुन को संदर्भित करता है क्योंकि यह उनके 12 नामों में से एक है, क्योंकि अर्जुन ने कई राज्यों पर विजय प्राप्त की और बहुत सारा धन लाया।

I bow to the God Ganesh, who removes the sufferings of the destitute or helpless, who is praised in the ancient texts and sayings. The elder son of the Shiva (Purari)- the destroyer of Tripura’s, the destroyer of the pride of the demons. The one who uses his powers during the great dissolution (Pralaya), adorned with gods like Agni as his ornaments. The one whose cheeks flows downs the fluid of grace like the elephant (Ganapati exudes grace/krupa (compassion) to those who worship him.), I adore you the primordial or ancient elephant-headed god. Dhananjaya refers to Arjuna as this is one of his 12 names, as Arjuna conquered many kingdoms and brought a lot of wealth।

नितान्तकान्तदन्तकान्तिमन्तकान्तकात्मजं
अचिन्त्यरूपमन्तहीनमन्तरायकृन्तनम्।
हृदन्तरे निरन्तरं वसन्तमेव योगिनां
तमेकदन्तमेव तं विचिन्तयामि सन्ततम्॥५॥

nitāntakāntadantakāntimantakāntakātmajaṃ
acintyarūpamantahīnamantarāyakṛntanam।
hṛdantare nirantaraṃ vasantameva yogināṃ
tamekadantameva taṃ vicintayāmi santatam॥5॥

गणेश एक विशेष चमक बिखेरते हैं, और असाधारण चमकदार दांत के कारण उनकी चमक (बढ़ी हुई) बढ़ जाती है। वह शिव के पुत्र हैं जो यम का भी अंत कर देते हैं (जो सभी का अंत कर देते हैं, शिव को अंतक का अंतक कहा जाता है और गणेश उस अंतक (शिव) के पुत्र हैं।) जिनका वास्तविक रूप अकल्पनीय है, नित्य, विघ्नों को दूर करने वाले हैं। योगी के हृदय में सदैव निवास करने वाले भगवान हैं। मैं एक दांत वाले और बाधाओं को दूर करने वाले ऐसे देवता का ध्यान करता हूं। अनंत विष्णु के लिए एक सामान्य शब्द है - जिसका कोई अंत नहीं है।

Ganesha exudes a special glow, and his radiance is accentuated (increased) due to the extraordinary radiant tusk. He is the son of Shiva who brings an end even for Yama (who brings an end to everyone). Shiva is referred to as Antaka’s antaka and Ganesha is the son of that Antaka (Shiva). The one who’s true form was unimaginable, The eternal one, the remover of obstacles. The god who lives in the hearts of yogi’s always. I meditate on the deity with a single tusk and the remover of obstacles. Anantha is a common word for Vishnu – the one who has no end.

महागणेशपञ्चरत्नमादरेण योऽन्वहं
प्रजल्पति प्रभातके हृदि स्मरन् गणेश्वरम्।
अरोगतामदोषतां सुसाहितीं सुपुत्रतां
समाहितायुरष्टभूतिमभ्युपैति सोऽचिरात्॥६॥

mahāgaṇeśapañcaratnamādareṇa yo'nvahaṃ
prajalpati prabhātake hṛdi smaran gaṇeśvaram।
arogatāmadoṣatāṃ susāhitīṃ suputratāṃ
samāhitāyuraṣṭabhūtimabhyupaiti so'cirāt॥6॥

इस अंतिम श्लोक में, श्री आदि शंकराचार्य इस गणेश पंचरत्न श्लोकों के जाप के फल की खोज करते हैं। जो व्यक्ति प्रतिदिन भक्ति के साथ महा गणेश पंचरत्नम का पाठ करता है और सुबह भगवान गणेश को हृदय में रखकर इसका पाठ करता है, उसे अच्छा स्वास्थ्य, दोषरहित जीवन या दोष रहित जीवन, अच्छे कौशल और शिक्षा, अच्छे बच्चे प्राप्त होते हैं। सभी आठ धन (अस्थाइवर्य) के साथ एक पूर्ण जीवन के साथ।

In this last shloka, Sri Adi Shankara delves into the fruits of chanting this Ganesha pancharatna shlokams. This is also known as Phalasruti in Samskrit. One who reads Maha Ganesha pancharatnam with devotion every day and recites this in the morning keeping God Ganesha in the heart will be granted good health, blamelessness or life without faults, good skills, and education, good children along with a complete life with all the eight wealth’s (Asthaiwaryas).
